Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge for a quotation?
"No.  Quotations are free and can be provided in writing."

Can you give me a price over the phone?
"Yes, but it would only be an estimate.  Due to the varying factors such as access for dragging out the waste, position of trees in relation to buildings etc. we would always recommend a site visit for an accurate quotation.

If it is difficult to find time for a quotation, we can visit in your absence and contact you by phone either whilst on site or later on in the day.  Alternatively, if you can explain what you would like to have done, we can post a business card through the door with a price on the back."

Do you take all the rubbish away at the end?
"Yes.  Large sections of timber are cut up, smaller pieces are processed through a woodchipper which directs the woodchips into the back of the truck.  We take all this away to be recycled."

Where is the tree waste taken?
"
Woodchips are taken to farms where they are used for animal bedding, mixed with slurry or used as a weed suppressant.  Timber pieces are used for fuel or stacked into habitat piles."

Can I keep the logs/woodchips for my own use?
"Certainly.  You can arrange this when the work is booked in or mention it to the tree surgery team on the day."

Do I need the Council’s permission to have my tree work done?
"Possibly.  You will need to apply for the local authority’s permission if the tree is in a Conservation Area or if it is covered by a Tree Preservation Order.  If in doubt, telephone your local planning department."

What is a Conservation Area?
"A Conservation Area is a section of land considered of special interest due to its physical appearance and/or historical factors.  If your tree is within such an area, you will need statutory permission before any tree work can be done."

What is a Tree Preservation Order?
"A Tree Preservation Order is a direction imposed by the Local Planning Authority that makes it an offence to prune, fell, uproot, damage or destroy a tree without the Authority’s permission.  You can find out whether or not your tree is covered by TPO by phoning your council’s planning department."

My neighbour’s tree overhangs my property.  What are my rights?
"Under common law, you may prune overhanging branches up to the boundary line.  You should offer the branches back.  You are not, however, allowed to trespass onto your neighbour’s land to prune their trees.

If you have a problem with a neighbour’s tree, the first thing you should do is discuss the matter with them and try to sort the matter out amicably."

What is my responsibility as a tree owner?
"To ensure that your tree does not present a health and safety risk to others.  Your insurance company may require you to have your tree checked by a tree surgeon on a regular basis.  They may even request a tree report to provide them with more information regarding the trees around your house."

When is the best time of year to prune my tree?
"This depends on the species.  We will be able to give you specific advice on your tree when we come to quote."

If I have my tree felled, will the tree stump regrow?
"Depending on species, trees will sometimes regenerate.  We can poison the stump to help prevent this from happening or we can arrange to have them ground out altogether."

Do I have to be at home when you come to do the work?
"No.  Providing we have adequate access and all the information we need."

I appreciate that accidents can happen.  What if my property gets damaged when you are working on my trees?
"This is very unlikely.  Andy Portlock Tree Specialists Ltd have an excellent health and safety record.  However, if we are responsible for any damage, we will ensure that matters are put right.  We hold Public Liability Insurance with £5 million cover."

Will you need access to a power supply?
"No.  All our power tools and machinery are petrol or diesel powered."

What Methods of Payment Do You Accept?
"
Cheque, cash, credit or debit card, Paypal.  On completion, our Charge hand will issue you with an invoice."
